Yea, I've tried it a bunch. Pretty hard to maintain the slide. I have better luck in the rain, can go the entire block sideways.
Most of the top drifting cars in the US Formula D championship are now American cars. An American V8 (most with SC) is way better for drifting than any turbo 4 or 6 cyl. Also Skylines are AWD, to get em to drift they converted em to RWD. Also haven't ever seen a FWD honda civic claim to invent drifitng. We're putting together a Nissan 240 sx (s14) with a LS1 6 speed that'll be awesome.

Personally if I were to do an import, I'd like to build a 1972 Datsun 510 with an LS2 and a 6 speed in it. I think that'd be fun too. My first car was a Datsun 510 2-door 4 speed. That thing was fun to beat on.

Update, my car can do nice circle drifts, the kind where it looks like someone is swinging the car by a rope attached to the bumper. I left black crop circles about 30 feet in diameter in a deserted parking lot today. I had to stop and let the smoke clear but the car is "driftable", I need a breezy day and someone to video for me. I need a spotter, its safer that way.
I may throw on my cheap tires and post some video next time.

Drifting Muscle
Honestly, the second best thing about the Dukes of Hazzard movie (after Jessica in a bikini) was the chase scene through Atlanta where the General drifts around the circle several times.

That was some awesome driving!
Overall, I think drifting is fun to watch (and do), but it gets you nowhere fast, and is not a very nice thing to do to your car...

I have a video shot by someone standing on the sidewalk during the General Lee round-about drift that surfaced on Rankin-Road before the movie came out. It's actually cooler than the scene in the movie. I'm not sure on the legalities of posting it again or even where I could post it. BTW, still not as hot as Jessica in the "Dasiy Duke" shorts!!

What's the point. It's the slowest way around the track.
Drifting is to Road Racing as Ice Dancing is to Ice Hockey.

Pete, sorry we missed you at SEMA...I didn't even see your car! Yes, we were looking for it.

I used to drift everywhere I went on the icy roads in the wintertime back in WI, but that was back before it was cool...

The vid of the general lee on you tube is better than the scene in the movie.

Pick a direction and go with it ;)
Personally, I like the road racing scene because there is more of a direct corelation between mods on the car and a hard number for performance. Isn't drifting judged?
There probably isnt much reason you couldnt do both, but dont go modifying your whole rear suspension with drifting in mind because having a loose car tends to make you slow on the road course. Maybe relocate your E brake to a hand brake and put a manual valve body in or something. I wouldnt go much further than that just for drifting unless you really get into it and want to forget about road racing :(

There have been drifting competitions in Japan for the last 20+ years. It is just now hitting the states. I pretty much accept any form of motorsports, but I don't really understand some of them. Why slide around a corner when you could drive around it faster. I like racing better, drifting has a big emphasis on things other than time, i.e. control of slide. Two cars go at it at the same time but they don't race. Kudos to those who master drifting, the cars are bad***, but I would rather watch a hardcore road race.

Okay, I gotta ask, what is the whole road race/drifting association? I've heard this connection from a number of kids who think the two are interchangable. IMO, road racing is about getting your car to STICK as much as possible, while drifting is about allowing the ass end of your car to SLIDE at will. Seemingly two opposed disciplines. Am I missing something?

It's judged becuse most people don't know how to drift, thus they can't make comparisons on their own.
It would be like someone new to road racing thinking that the driver of a z06 is better than the driver of an 86 escort because the z06 was a few tenths of a second faster around the track.
