Hey everyone.
I've been working on a 68 RS/SS for a while and have a C4 IRS swapped in.
Went all-out on the thing for a long time (got burned out) and mothballed the car to get several old bike projects finished up.

Anyway..........
The last couple months have been really productive but strayed from originals plans.
The sb 400/700R4 was ditched and a 461/4L80 is in assembly.

My gut feeling is to remove the IRS and swap in a 9" (I have the unit w/3.50 posi). Mainly needing a set of Strange axles and I'd have a worry-free rear end.

Yet the IRS is set up in the car and is the ultimate pedestrian-viewing upgrade.
All I'd need is a 44 pumkin and strengthened shafts.
I'd really like to keep the IRS, but I fear blowing a yoke or u-joint.

So my question(s)........
Will a 44 center bolt into the 36 batwing?
and is the 44 capable of 800/900/1K HP?

Thanks.

yes
a 44 will hold up, you will need the diff and bat wing, the wings are different for the 36 & 44.
I like the install of the IRS.
take a look

I autocross and generally abuse it. My camaro is for fun so I drive it like I stole it.

The rear end will be good too ~750TQ or so with slicks. With crappy street tires(anything over 40 treadwear) youre not going to get the traction to break that axle. I would upgrade the halfshafts and youll be fine. I worked with a guy that has 1000# at the wheels through a supercharged LT4 car and with dragway specials he never broke his rear end, he was masterfull at smooth launches though, and taught me a lot about the correct way to tune a car and drive it to make a smooth launch work.

Good info. Thanks.

But that's just the issue.
I need to be confident when stabbing the go pedal that nothing's going to twist off.
Yes traction will be the weak factor, but....... not sure if it'll ever be run at the track.
Just hate to crash the car or cause a wreck from a failed small part.

I didn't mention all aspects of the engine, but it'll be turbo'd and all other stuff should be good for 1K+ (not saying that's what it'll put down).

So what's the going price for 44 "upgrade" parts?

Track or not, crappy street tires are crappy street tire, traction is what breaks things. With those tires you wont be able to do much with your power, and wont be able to break much. You can get the Dana built by a vette racing shop in the $1400 range.
