I bought a car with a th400 in it and some kind of converter behind it. I pulled it out, but the only thing stamped on it is D03. Is there any way to figure out the stall? I am getting ready to do a cam, but would prefer not to replace the TC if I don't need to. The car had a pretty radical cam and head job on a 5.3L (which broke), but the people that built it didn't seem to know what they were doing, so I dont want to rely too heavily on that.

You may be able to get it tested but you know you would be much better off installing a TC that you KNOW works with your combo... I think you need to bite the bullit and get a new one sized for your application.

TC's don't seem worth it to change the tranny to me, less than $500 doesn't seem terrible for something that can improve driving so much. I'm almost in the same boat -- I have a TH400 with a 2000 stall convertor and I am 75% sure it slips in the higher RPM's so I'm going to be looking to replace it soon.
