Ok I have a 67 camaro putting out about 550 horses. I have a line on 2 68 camaro 12 bolts and a 67 center section. 900 bucks for the rears open diffs and 350 for the housing. I know the 12 bolt will need to be beefed up. Currie said 3 grand to deck the 12 bolt out and3 grand for a 9inch. I know it sounds like a no brainer and go with the 9 inch, but somehow I think the tight wad in me can get it done cheaper.

You would be much farther ahead to go with a new axle... Whatever you decide on. Spending over a grand on "junk" that still needs to be built is throwing money out the window.
After the issues we had rebuilding the 9" housing for BadAst, next time, I'm going new... I will have over two grand into the rearend as it is and it is still needing a lot of cleanup to get rid of the old rust.
Do a fab 9... my opinion.

Take a look at the new Moser 12 bolts. You will be in less than building an old housing you don't have. Their housings are far better than the factory housings could ever be.

Another option Ive looked into is sutton engineering in La Habra california. They said they will weld new bearing ends on, weld the tubes to the center section and new axles for about 600-700 bucks. Car craft did a write up using these guys and have heard other great things on other sites.

For what it's worth, project Dust Off was equipped with a 12 bolt rear. When I started the pro-touring conversion I initially just planned to rebuild the existing 12 bolt. After getting all the prices I started reconsidering. Even having the 12 bolt to start with, it was going to cost me nearly $1800 to get it the way I wanted. I looked aroung and finally deciced to go with a Moser 9" Circle Track rear housing with floating hubs and axles for $879. I still have to add a center section but I have seen fresh rebuilt units in any gear ratio for $600 on ebay. Once I sell the 12 bolt I will have very little money in the new Moser 9".
