Most likely a 8.2" rear. What kind of car is it in?

1971 lemans

Then it is very likely to be a 8.2" 10 bolt.

That looks like an 8.5" pontiac 10 bolt. I have one that i got from a 71 ventura that is going in my 68 firebird. The 8.2 has the eyebrow on the rear cover, and does not have the notches on the bottom of each side of the pumpkin. The chevrolet 8.5's have solid square blocks at the bottom on each side, where the pontiacs have sort of a half circle notched out of those blocks. Look below the 2 bottom cover bolts on each side (the ones on each side of the very bottom center cover bolt). Thats my guess. I had a chevy 8.5 10 bolt out of a 72 nova in my 67 camaro. All the internal parts are interchangeable in the 8.5's. Not so with the chevy/pontiac 8.2's. Scott

I am no expert by any means, but thats what it looks like to me. I have the same thing sitting in my shop & its an 8.5 pontiac.

Definatly a BOP rear, as others said, most likely an 8.5".

IF IT IS AN 8.5 im happy cause i will just upgrade it ..... but if its the 8.2 then im probably looking at a 12 bolt swap

Looks like an 8.5 bop rearend. I have a 8.2 rear in my car with many hard miles 60 passes at the track, autocrossed and routinly beat on. I've broken th350's, a richmond 6 speed three times and the rear has lived. They have bolt in axels. Heres a link to some info.

yea that cover looks like an 8.2, but those tabs on the bottom make it look like and 8.5. someone could have changed the rear if it is an 8.5 becaused based on what I can find they never put an 8.5 in a gto lemans before 72.

The 8.2 cover has the eyebrow like the chevrolet 8.2. Pull the cover & poke around a bit. Wont take much investigating once the cover is off. You'll want to know if its a series 2 or 3 carrier. 2.73 & up= 3 series, below 2.73= series 2. If it has C-clip axles its likely an 8.5. The 8.2 doesnt look like yours. The BOP 8.2 doesnt have C-clips, at least it doesnt in 1st gen firebirds. I have one under my 68 firebird right now, i'll post a pic of it tomorrow and also my 8.5 BOP.

That is a 64-67 GM "B" or "P" diff. 8.2" ring gear, had bearing retained axles & came with either 2 or 4 spider gears & 6 or 8 carrier bolts depending on year & application.
