View Full Version : 69 camaro control arms: too many choices!

Ok I think I have completely overloaded myself with information trying to figure out what control arms to purchase for my car.
Right now I have rebuilt the lowers with the Global West Del-a-lum bushings and the uppers with moog to get it on the street about a year ago. The rear suspension is done (BMR Watts link) and time to do the front so I can get this thing back on the ground after 6 months. I don't mind replacing both arms if necessary but all ready invested coin in the lowers, but im sure I could sell em.

Im looking for some input from people who have used different control arms on their car, thoughts, experiences.

Another thing, do all of these clear once the G-mod is done without cutting down the old mounting point?

Only Speedtech and Ride Tech Arms work with the redrill.

I was overwhelmed too on the choices so I started looking into the claims made by each manufacturer and trying to separate the wheat from the chaff. Maybe you might find something from this discussion too.

I started the phone call dance yesterday. Pretty sure I found my answers. Thanks folks! This, I think, was my last major decision to make on the car!

Thanks Frank. That was one of the major questions I couldn't get answered from anyone. Also If after I re-drilled if there was clearance so i didn't have to cut down the mount. (in case i ever wanted to go back to stock)

I would use a tall upper ball joint before I would do the G-mod. The G-mod is free but the tall ball joint is simpler, more beneficial and still very reasonable. We recently mapped the camber curve of the G-mod vs. tall ball joint vs. tall spindle and the tall ball joint actually gives a little better camber curve than the G-mod does, about .2-.3 degrees more negative camber per 1/2" of compression.

So how does the tall ball joint compare to the tall spindle? AFX spindle?

Our test assumed a 25" tall tire with a 6" frame height. The tall ball joint was tested against an AFX spindle and the camber curve remained similar until the bump reached 1.5" from static. At that point the curve became a little more aggressive, gaining -.3 at 1.5" compression, -.4 at 2", -.5 at 2.5", and -.6 at 3" over the tall ball joint. These numbers are better and the spindle would be the ideal choice however the value of the tall ball joints cannot be discounted. Generally speaking I would say that for the average enthusiast, tall ball joints will improve the camber curve sufficiently for most driving requirements...

BMR, thanks for the input! Not trying to steal the thread, just thought this would be helpful to others too)
*That makes things a little easier for us guys that cant spend 1000+ dollers on spindles alone! Allthough everyone would love AFX and Corvett brakes its a little unobtainable for the average enthusiest! This is great info. Would you recomment a set up like this for a car that only sees the track every once and a while?:
-SPC Adjustable uppers
-tall upper ball joints
-stock spindles
-2" drop springs or coil overs?
-Sotck or aftermarked lower control arms? Maybe BMR's since they accept both coil spring and coil overs?

Thanks alot, the wife makes me a budget guy! Hahaha

That setup will definitely wake your car up. A better camber curve, increased positive caster capability, and a lowered CG is what we are all looking for. Your build recipe will accomplish all of that and at minimal cost. Nothing wrong with that! We are actually in the process of re-designing our first gen A-arms. I am not sure when you will be ready but in a week or two our A-arms will have increased positive caster and require less shim stack to achieve proper camber settings on lowered vehicles. We are adding 2 degrees of caster to the lower A-arm and 2 degrees on the upper. This split keeps the wheel centered in the wheelwell and allows plenty of positive caster without a lot of staggered shims.

Thanks for the advice BMR. I plan on this setup soon as I can start wrenching again!

These are nice! What type of bushings are you using? Do these change the ride height?

Poly bushings and our lower arms do not have lowered spring buckets. Here is a picture of our rolling suspension for the 1st gens...which has our new front control arms, coilover kit installed.
