I need to check the run out on my bell housing. i've searched but no luck. I get the concept but not how I center the dial indicator on the crank. Is there a specific adaptor for it? what I have read or found they say use a magnetic base, just don't see how that will center? At least not the one i have.

You do not need to center the magnetic base. Easiest way is to remove a flywheel bolt and place the base on the flat surface of the flywheel between the bolts.

Keisler has a vid up on youtube that's quite helpful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sTdTBq6-EI

I am in the same position and still wondering why the indicator doesn't need to be centered?

The indicator does not need to be centered because as the flywheel/crank rotates the end of the indicator is still measuring the same effective distance to the outside of the circle. If it is perfect, you will see no movement on the indicator.

I think I answered this question on here before, but it may have been a different forum. I sketched up this quick pic of 4 positions of the indicator base with the line coming out of it as the dial indicator. In my crude sketch the lines are all the same length showing that the circle is concentric w/ the center line of the crank.

Thanks Brandon - it makes perfect sense now!

No problem - - I had to think about it for a minute the first time I did one.
