I have a 67 camaro that I am ready to upgrade the steering system on. It now has a factory power box with no pump hooked up :spank2:
I searched these forums and haven't really found any answers...... What box and pump would you guys run on this car? I want to also upgrade the column to an ididit unit at the same time. This car will not see any track time, but I would like to be able to have some fun on the twisty roads up the california coast :)
I am not sure whether I want a power set up or manual?? What are my options?
Thanks in advance for your help,
Brandon

I'd give Tom Lee a call at Lee Manufacturing. He'll set you up with exactly what you need.

What he said Tom is the best. Sent 3 people to him, now I need 2 boxes done! Best in business.

I support and appreciate the vendors that regularly contribute to the knowledge on this forum, but I'd rather see an answer to the OP's question versus who to call to get that info. What good is a tech forum if information isn't shared?

To the OP: I was looking into the same upgrade and came across the following information. Hope this helps you...

I would keep the stock 67 column, it is energy absorbing and is an excellent unit..

I have the 12:1 Lee box on my car. I works well with the stock 64 power steering pump. Call Lee manufacturing and buy one direct. You will need to get the orifice size from them and drill out the stock orifice..

Be careful, there are a lot of suspension companies on this internet who are more then willing to sell you parts you don't need..

If you want to write a check and have it ready to bolt on, call Lee's because they do it for a living and are good at it.

If you want to piece it together (like I did) you will still wind up calling Lee's for the inserts if you don't have custom hoses made. I used an '87 Grand National box on my car with the Lee's inserts and new rag joint. Worked like a charm. I would advise against using the newer Camaro boxes. I was cautioned that they had internal stops that kept the wheels from turning lock to lock. Your mileage may vary because I know a lot of folks have done it. You can also send your box to Lee's and they will but the nice internals in your stock box so you'll have that original look to it.

I second the referral to Mark (Marcus) at SC&C even if you end up with a Lee box. He will help you with all the bits and pieces and give you the +/- of each option and he literally wrote the book "How to make your muscle car handle" and he speaks layman's speak. I called Tom Lee directly, he is a great guy and also willing to talk but within a short while he was speaking steering Greek as his technical knowledge is second to none. Also, if you end up with a Lee box patience is required as he is a small shop and very busy. Mark set me up with a Borgeson 670 box which for my use as an aggressive street car and a love for the twisties is more than adequate.
