They aren't giving out the Chevy name for it yet.....

Anyone have a guess what the name will be?...A Chevelle in the works?

Cops will be getting Caprices next year, so my guess is Caprice.

Holden has also developed a U.S. market version of its mechanically identical Caprice long wheelbase sedan for police applications, but GM continues to insist that it will be for law enforcement duty only.

Also developed? This could be interesting.

Never been a huge fan of pontiac styling--a bit over the top for me.

However, The G8 was hands down the coolest looking sedan I have ever laid my eyes on. I fear that when GM transfers the platform to Chevy, it will lose the styling that made it so awesome to begin with.

I'm thinking I may have to get a G8 eventually as a commuter/traveler. We'll see though. I like them and would love to build a blown one. Business wise, I think it's a good car to have in the market. I think it's priced well for what it offers and could make money for GM if they don't uglify it

Chevelle would be a good choice for a name. I highly doubt it, though.

I really don't think it will be a retro name... That would just ask for all the cry babies to come back out again following the GTO debacle.

I agree. If they hadn't called the Monaro a GTO for the US, I think it would have sold far better. Just too much expectation.
Glad to see them using that G8 platform for something in the US though. My G8 is probably the best new car I've ever had.

Is a wagon too much to ask for?

I hope they bring it out soon, so used ones are starting to get cheap when my wife starts complaining about needing a newer car...

I've heard , through the grapevine , that it will be a Caprice ( police package only ).
I don't know if it will hit the consumer market or not.

I'd rather see it as a Chevelle , myself.
But the GM goobers have pointed out that the Caprice was a longer running , more popular car than the Chevelle , and sold more units..
What do I know ???

I would buy one if they get the styling right. I really liked the G8 and may have to pick up a used one at some point in time.

The Caprice is the long wheelbase Holden "Statesman", not the regular wheelbase "Commodore". GMH sells the long wheelbase as a police car in the middle east badged as a Caprice - in China, the long wheelbase model is built and badged as a Buick. The short wheelbase Commodore is sold as a Chevrolet Lumina in the middle east and South Africa.

My guess would be that it replaces the current impala, but i hope not, considered the modern incarnation of the word impala invokes thoughts of ghetto tasteless cars(atleast for me)

The only car that's replacing the new Impala is the Impala itself (it is not related to the G8 or Caprice cop car). I could tell you how I know but then I'd have to shoot you in the face.

It is, then it isn't, then it is, then it isn't. I hope it is. I'd like to have one...particularly if the redesign is a little less "Pontiac-ish".

They already have them rebadged as Chevy's over in Europe, always have. They call them Lumina SS over there. I hope they give it a new name, not a retro name, and not one that reminds people of cheap taxis and police cars.

I'm glad they're bringing it back. One of the biggest disappointments of the GM bankruptcy was killing Pontiac just as they get the best car in years online.

The top car is the Caprice that is being sold here only to law enforcement in the U.S. As far as I know there are no plans to sell it to the general public.

First time I'm seeing the Buick. Must have been something they did across the pond.

ArtosDracon

Both of those cars are based on the long wheel base, the G8 and the supposed new chevy are the short wheel base chassis.

This is the lumina SS sold in the middle east based on the SWB chassis.

This is why losing the G8 was so sad...it was the first car I can think of in decades where the iconic split grill actually fit the vehicle and improved on its basic design. Losing it, loses the car.

The Lumina is MILES better than the Caprice, but still no G8!

Agreed on the split grill fitting the car and making the car. The G8 was a great looking machine and is a rim swap away from being the best looking 4 door out there with the performance to boot.

I love the idea of the car being named Chevelle, the downside is they never said if it will be available as a 2 or 4dr.With the 5th gen camaro out and the vette I cant see them making it a 2 dr and honestly how many of you would be happy with a 4dr only chevelle?Monte carlo, good thought but didnt they just redo the monties?I had never thought about the bel air name coming back but believe they wont come back because everyone associates it with the fings/flares of the tri 5's.The Vega/Monza and chevette were compact cars as far as style goes.Lumina is what I believe it will be released as but would perfer the monza name plate.

I think that is in the Middle East. Chevy doesn't exist as a brand in most of Europe. It's Vauxhall in the UK and Opel on the mainland, neither of which to my knowledge has a version of the G8.

From the link above.

While Holden has developed a long-wheelbase performance model for the US police market, based on the Caprice, Oppenheiser said it is more likely that a car for the retail market will be based on the short-wheelbase Commodore.

"The police told us they wanted the long-wheelbase in the rear for the crooks but I have a hand in what we do with Holden and I don't think we would do long-wheelbase [for the private market]."

He also rejected US media reports that the rear-wheel-drive architecture would be pressed into service in GM's other passenger vehicle brands, Cadillac and Buick.

Nice! I didn't expect any UK cars to be using an engine that big! Apart from the boy racer accents, it's a good looking car. I prefer that grill (and the commodore's) to the G8's.

not many uk cars ever have a motor that big with gas at nearly 10 bucks a gallon!! it used to be a vauxhall monaro when it first came over from oz, the uk also had the vxr 220 which was out years before the solstice and was turbo powered instead of supercharged, (if my memory serves me!!lol) the vauxhall front end looks better than the bland chevy one, g8 was way better imo.

Last I heard it was an overseas only vehicle. Don't expect them to hit showrooms. I guess it could be a police car in the states. It wouldn't make sense to have an unmarked police-use-only police car though. Saw pictures of it in non-us trim a while ago. Ugly car carrying the Caprice badge. The Chevrolet name of caprice make sense.

They'll probably call it a Lumina, which is sad, especially if the heap the SS badge on it. Lumina does not have a good image in the US, but maybe it's been long enough for folks to have forgotten those crappy cars.

What about something classy like Biscayne? Or Superior?
