A friend of mine lost the rear axle out of his 1971 Camaro. I found a rear axle online from a 1992 camaro with 3:73. Are they both the same length?

No, they are not the same length, and that's not all. The '92 rear end will be the small 7 5/8 10 bolt. The third gen Camaro has a coil spring suspension with a torque arm, and the second gen Camaro has leaf springs. These are completely different rear ends. The third gen rear end shouldn't even be considered for a second gen. The second gen 8.5 rear end is MUCH stronger than teh third gen rear end, or maybe I should say that the third gen rear end is MUCH weaker.

A rear end from a '70 to '81 Camaro or Firebird will fit. The '70 had a 8.2 10 bolt or 12 bolt. From '71 and up they all had the 8.5 10 bolt. The only thing that changed from '71 to '81 was the location of the bracket that holds the brake line and the yoke. Both of those can be fixed easily if they don't match what you have now. Why not rebuild the rear end that's in the car now?
