View Full Version : Strange 9" unit, pinion offset?

Trying to make sure I get all my measurements right before ordering my axles so I don't wind up with an expensive set of fireplace pokers.

I have a Strange 9" unit, iron. Having a tough time determining the pinion offset. I'm coming up with around 15/16. Is that right? Just want to make sure I'm measuring the right points.

Am I over thinking this, or am I doing something wrong here?

Trying to use Currie's calculator (maybe that's the problem?) to figure out my axle lengths.

Measurements as follows:

Housing width: 54.25
Pax side: 23.0625
Drivers side: 21.375
Brake space: 2.5
Rotor Hat thickness: .188
Diff pinion offset: .937

I thought 0.5" was "standard" - that's what my Currie is. If it is unique because it is a case Strange has made for them they should be able to tell the offset. You will also discover that not all combinations of measurments are provided in that calculator, e.g. 4th Gen LS1 brakes have a 2.75 offset and it is not in the drop-down menu. I had to run the numbers (using 2.5) and then make some hand calcs to allow for it.

I've always used 1" for the offset, though I've found literature that says the offset is 15/16". I'd say you can have 60% confidence that's the right answer. (maybe I spent too much time in Corporate America today? :) )

To clarify, I have confirmed the pinion offset at 15/16. But when plugging my measurements into that calculator I am getting returns that aren't making sense to me.

JP, your understanding of this is deeper than mine. Can you play with it and see if you get the same results?

Can you play with it and see if you get the same results? You bet. I'll try to do it tonight.

Mention a 9" unit and Nick comes a-calling.

...not that there's anything wrong with that.

When I narrow 9" housings, I always cut them pinion center, and order the axles accordingly. I always use this tool for calculating axle length, really makes ordering axles easy. Ron
