The 2010 OPTIMA Ultimate Street Car Invitational is scheduled for Friday and Saturday November 5th and 6th. Because Spring Mountain Motorsports Park is not equipped with spectator facilities or parking, we are sorry to say that we are required to limit the number of people allowed into the facility on Saturday November 6th.

1 - Each participant will be allowed a maximum of two crew members, no exceptions.

2 - You may enter the facility as an event volunteer on Saturday, we need 30 volunteers to operate the event. If you are a volunteer, you should be prepared to work a good portion of the day on one or multiple events. We will do our best to rotate the volunteers on a regular basis so they can see the various events.

If you wish to volunteer, please send your name, email and cell phone number along with any specialty skills you might have (tech, timing/scoring, registration, parking, cone shagging, etc.) to [email protected]. We will confirm your entry with an email, which means you are on the volunteer list. If you do not receive an email confirmation, do not assume you're on the list. The gate staff at Spring Mountain will not allow you into the event if your name is not on the list.

If you miss the volunteer list, it may be possible to become a crew member for one of the participants. The participants are listed, check with them about helping out.

Also, this year's OUSCI will include a Road Rally on Friday afternoon/evening from Las Vegas to Pahrump. This is a great opportunity to meet all the participants and see the cars up close and personal. Again, we truly wish we could bring everyone to the track, but safety is our overriding concern. We appreciate your enthusiasm for the event, thanks for your understanding.

OUSCI Race Director

It's a bummer but having spent a lot of time at Spring Mountain I see why they did this.

There's no way to control crowds.. SM is NOT set up for the public since it's a private track. Spectators can wander around the paddock which is a safety concern.. there arn't many restrooms, not much in the way of food, etc.

In other words it's not spectator friendly.. maybe next year they should more the event to someplace like Las Vegas Motor Speedway?

I agree that he spectators do make the event more fun but I can see where they have to worry about safety.

Hey, can I bring someone as my safety spotter while I shoot pics? Maybe a female 18-yo Russian exchage student?? lol

Very disappointing, I went last year, and I don't see the problem. Very disappointed with the late notice, as we can't change our flights and we are coming all the way from Australia. I guess for OPTIMA the challenge will to convince me to support them.https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/images/smilies/thumbsdown.gif

Send a not about being a volunteer at the event.. make note of where you are coming from. Worth a shot :)

I guess I understand where they are coming from. Was there a specific issue that prompted the "no spectator rule" for this year.

I helped out early last year (hanging signs and helping set up tables etc.) and then for the most part was a spectator for the remainder of the day. I didn't feel that it was an unsafe environment for myself, but I kind of know what to look out for and purposely tried to stay the hell out of everyone's way.

I think in order for this "movement" if we want to call it that, to continue to grow and prosper, spectators will need to be a big part of the events. The spectators are the folks that are striving to incorporate aspects of the the cars that are participating in these events as well as the parts used on them into their own builds.

I understand the liability associated with having spectators running around a road course that isn't necessarily set up for spectators, and respect the fact that difficult decisions have to made, but I tend to agree with Steve's comment from above that the venue may need to change in the future to allow for people to safely come out to watch.

Hopefully the "no spectator rule" is a short-term solution.

That s**ks I was really looking forward to attending this event. Maybe Optima will change locations next year. I have to agree with Greg from Australia on this one. Optima should of thought this one out a little more. Oh well maybe next year.

I too thought it was strange to give very little notice on this after encouraging spectators for the past two years. We actually changed our initial plans so that we could attend the event and to miss out on it would have sucked.

I was at the track for a recent event and the club house/ condo area COULD be a spectator haven IF the track agreed to open the bathrooms.... They have some observation towers and spots to see most of the track.... Just have to keep the hot pits where they were last year....

Looks like I'll go to the Lucas Oil Offroad series at LMS instead. Highly disapointed......OUSCI was the only real reason I was flying out to Vegas.

This new rule is unfortunate. I have been to the two previous events, and loved every minute of the food and racing. After leaving this event, I really felt inspired to get back to work on my Camaro. I'm sure (well, I hope) the event organizer will take all of the comments as positive feedback, and come up with a creative solution for next year. Having the opportunity to see these cars actually do what they were built for is pretty cool. I really wanted to see/hear Stielow's 69 go down the front straight wide open...

I even bought a shirt to help the one lap Camaro.

That won't happen again!

Curious why you say this?? If you didn't get your shirt, let me know and I'll check up on it. I'm the one that mailed out the shirts ...

Mary, pretty sure he's not mad at the One Lap Car, or you for getting or not getting a t-shirt.

Proceeds from your Tshirt purchase most likely went to help fund James' One Lap effort, or was donated to charity. I get that you are upset over the spectator thing, but your anger is misdirected.

Mary,
I am not definitely not complaining about you or James. I got the shirt and am happy with it, if it supports you and James then I have no problem and am glad to help. The reason I am slightly disgruntled is due to the fact that I stayed in Vegas an extra day to attend this event and now cannot.

I would think from a public relations standpoint Optima would want spectators to attend, if the track cannot support it then they should think of another location that can.

I hear ya. last year i attended due to the good graces of Ride Tech. I will say that spectater area is VERY limited, but the track facility is first rate. My guess is that insurance is a nightmare for this typr of event, I know what it cost for our Big-10 challenge, and that is a tiny event in comparison. I would think that Optima is doing all that is reasonable to get the most out of this event.

People, stop complaining. If you want to see the event, volunteer. Last year, they were short on volunteers and extra SMMR employees were called in to work. The more volunteers there are, the less work each one has to do and the more they can each see.

If you don't like that idea, each competing car is allowed a certain number of pit members. Find an understaffed car, offer to help, and beg for entry.

I think there are two reasons for the spectator ban. First, is safey/security. They don't need people wandering around aimlessly finding trouble. Secondly, it should serve to encourage volunteering among those who want to see the event but aren't yet involved. This works both ways; allowing random spectators leaves little incentive for people to volunteer at all.

So yea, send Mr. Day an email and volunteer.

I've basically just reiterated this:
