I just picked up this new project today. We will be doing all the rust repair, removing the drip rails, adding metal flares and a few more surprises.
Chris leaves for Iraq for a year and while he is there serving our country we will be restoring his fastback. I think the hardest thing for Chris will be leaving his son.

I can't imagine leaving my kids for a month let alone a year. Thank Chris for his commitment :usa: and have his boy do some work on the car when you can - I know my son loves working on my car and to have some pics of him enjoying himself working on the car would make me smile. Good luck with the project - I'm looking forward to seeing it unfold...

Gents and Rusty,

Thanks for all the kind words. Leaving my son is always very tough, but in my case I can probably buy a few years of stability for him and I if I do this now. I can't elaborate too much on PT, but I have lined up an awesome job over there that will get me to DC a few times over the year to see my son. I also get two weeks at home during the middle of the tour. I have had a great career over the past nine years full of great opportunities and plan on sticking with it. Though there have been some long tough days/weeks/months/years, I couldn't imagine doing anything else.

I am placing my Fastback in the capable hands of Rusty and his son Brian. I have seen the work they done first hand and it is high quality.

I am looking forward to future updates. I am enjoying my last week or so in the states before I head overseas.

Tough seeing my boy leave for a year. Chris is the brother I never had. I'd like to say I can take a little credit for dragging him into the money pit...I mean hobby that we are on here to share and indulge.

I know Chris will be safe, but I hope this coming year flies by for him. Look forward to seeing updates on the fastback.

And the pic of the little guy sitting on top of the car is fantastic.

Nick D:, brother you have been an enabler, but I have always loved cars!

Gents, I did find it on craigslist. It came kind of complete, but was a T Code (6 cyl). I do have all the original glass and some odds and ends.

Hivewax: I love your car, she looks great. My son votes for a green paint job, but I am still debating.

I will be as safe as I can over there. I have been to every country in the Middle East except Syria and Iran, so I have learned a thing or two about being safe. You can never be too careful though.

After closer inspection we decided to replace the quarters and cut them off before getting it blasted. They had been patched with fiberglass mat and a lot of resin. Now all the inner structure will be rust free and epoxy primed before the quarters go on.

It had been patched with fiberglass mat so there is a lot of hidden rust. The first thing we need to do is repair all the rust.

No problem just let me know ahead of time since at this time we are working out of two shops. One fab shop and one paint and assembly shop.

What you did to the shock towers, is that what they call "stitch welding"? Sorry if thats a dumb question.

I think that is closer to seam welding than stitch welding, though local to an area, not the whole car.

Some guys, especially rally car builders stitch weld the car, think on an inch, off an inch throughout the car and especially in the floorpan area to keep the car strong but also allowing a little give.

I am not an expert, but this is what I have picked up. Any all knowing people, feel free to correct me.

break: Good stuff Rusty. She should be a lot stronger with all that new metal you are putting in.

The fender aprons had been replaced at one time but they had not cut out all of the old metal and were not welded in some places. Brian removed the fender apron cleaned it up and welded back in and repaired a little rust.

I think the challenge motor needs some new rings... Whatcha think? I am not quite sure, were we burning wood or gas in that thing? It sure as hell was smoking a bit. :)

So, what are the plans for the car's engine? Looks like either a 289/302/351 since you kept the shock towers. Brian is doing a heck of a nice job in this Florida heat.

I have the entire drivetrain from an 89 5.0 in pieces in storage. So it will be an EFI 302 with a T-5. I am not sure on heads yet, I hope to find a good deal on some aluminum heads. I want to keep the car nice and light.

This afternoon Brian starting making the right subframe connector. Since the early Mustang has no torque box in the front we are making one out of 2 x 2 and also welding it to the rocker and the rear torque box. He still has to finish welding to the rocker.

It has been awhile since we have worked on this project we have been working on a couple of other projects but it is time to start working on the 65 Fastback.

I admit, I didn't pick the best shell. If I every buy another car like this, I will tell the guy we can settle on the price after media blasting. The frame rails are good front to back as is the engine bay, roof, tunnel, firewall, rear deck lid, and passenger side fender. And after all, I could have probably done this cheaper with a dynacorn 67, but this will be a real 65 Fastback, built to my specs.

The other good part here is that the car is being taken apart and epoxy primed. No matter how original a car you have, the original materials don't always hold up.

Rusty and Brian's work looks great so far.

Just finishing the metal work on a 66 fastback with the same light body must have been a factory option back then huh. When we took off the upper cowl panel someone had been in there before us to fix a lightening hole in put some shove pipe in there for the raised portion for the air intake. It was nice might post some pics if u don't mind.

Yeah, the work looks great and I am just taking easy pot shots at ya... The fastback and "piggy" will just have to face off when they are complete. I think the power to weight ratio may be in your favor until I install an LS... Or buy everything Anvil has to offer to lighten up Ms. piggy... Bench racing til then. :)

Great bench racing buddy, I don't mind some light mockery, all in good fun. With the extreme shortage of go-fast parts for 5.0L mustangs (i think someone may make some nice spark plug wires), I will have a hard time keeping up with your mullet mobile, especially considering the nuclear powered LS motors running around these days.

I made it back to Iraq today, 4.5 months to go. The jet lag rough. I am wide awake at 3 am.

Brian cut the drip rails off than drilled out the spot welds and removed the roof. Now he can repair the rust and epoxy prime the area that the factory left bare metal.

The door jambs in my '68 were rusted out like that. That's when I decided it wasn't worth keeping. At the time I was just a 20 yeard old kid, and knew it would take more than it would cost to get a nice, used 5.0, so it made no financial sense for me.

Rusty and Brian are doing a great job of bringing her back to life. I joke that she spent the 70s and 80s stored upside down in a salt water pond with the engine bay and frame rails sticking out above the waterline.

I didn't do the best job in picking this car up, the previous owners patched a lot with fiberglass that didn't show up until it came back from media blasting.

This is quite a commitment, but I really trust the shop and even though this is going to cost quite a bit, they are really fair with their rates. Considering all the ugly stories on here about paint jail and deals gone bad, I can suck up some rust repair.

WOW! Some really nice metal work going on here. Thanks for saving one. I use to love cruising around in a 68 fastback GT when I was 17 years old. Seems like these poor cars have just rusted away to nothing in the last 15 years. One of my favorite muscle cars of all time.

The major bodywork is finished on the cowl. I just need to prime and block sand a couple of times. We are waiting for the apron to cowl extensions to come in than I will epoxy prime.

Wow, My hats off to you guys for saving this one, most would have scrapped it. most people dont understand what it takes, but I have done alot of this and it is just plain and simple hard work, and very time consuming.

Very nice work! I have done lots of Mustangs (have 3 in my shop right now), and can appreciate how much time and effort has gone into this. I once did a '65 coupe for my cousin, and it got every piece of exterior sheetmetal that was available replaced, except the cowl and rear deck panel. This is the more extensive rust than I have had to deal with on a Mustang, but with the workmanship going in, and epoxy priming areas that never would have been accessible otherwise, this car will last much longer than even a cherry original.

I am back from one year in Iraq! It feels great to be home. I spent the last few weeks skiing out west with my son and girlfriend and did a little house hunting in N California. I am spending the next month off from work and at the beach prior to moving out west. I am enjoying my downtime.

The progress looks good. At least the frame rails made it!

Now that the rear panels fit it is time to prep the frame rails. As Brian was cleaning the front trunk floor he found a few rust pin holes. He cut out the bad area and made three patches one at a time to keep it from warping the edge that hangs down.

You should use the rear truck floor crossmember reinforcement and corner trunk braces for the convertible to help stiffen it up more. Actually using as much of the convertible parts as possible would be the way to go. Ford has done this with the Cobra "R" models to make them stiffer for racing.

Rusty, That is great progress. Good stuff! I grinned big when I saw the pics.

cobragt: I will look into the trunk corner braces. Since the rear crossmember is welded in, I am not going to worry about it. I don't know if you saw the earlier pics, but there are some pretty stout subframe connectors installed. Additionally, the seams on the shock towers were welded up. We are also going to install a metal plate behind the rear seats for a some additional rigidity.

The dynacorn piece saved me serious cash. It was about 300 from CJs.

From what it looks like the convertible brace goes over the other one. We were actually going to do this with my brothers 66 coupe before it was hit in the rear. After it was totaled he got his Fastback and we just transfered everything.

As a home builder I usually just rattle can primer on bare metal, and need to start trying some weld thru primer for spaces that I can't reach. Just wondering how the pros do it differently.

ATO: Not a ton of the original car is left. Trans tunnel, firewall, front clip, trunk and backseat floor, frame rails. I think they can salvage the roof skin.

The outer wheelhouse did not match the inner. We had this same problem on the 65 coupe and the outer wheelhouse was from a different vendor. Brian cut it in two than test fit the front

That is kind of what I was wondering Nick but I don't keep up on early Mustangs to know if that year/model was available. . My uncle did a 66 Fastback that was severely rotted and his build cost was in the 6 figures. It was all shop built but the body shop bill on those kinds of cars is crazy due to the insane amount of hours.

I think Dynacorn is going to come out with one but that sure doesn't help you know. Good luck with the build, I will be following along.

Fair question, there may have been a point where, melting the thing would have been the way to go, but at that point I was deployed overseas and was willing to gut it out. Also, would rather have an original VIN and can't get a 65 Dynacorn.

Rusty and Brian have very fair rates, especially considering their quality. I also trust the guys and given the number of paint jail stories on the site, that counts for a lot.

In terms of costs, i got most of the drivetrain and EFI cheaply, so in the drivetrain part of the build, it will be reasonable.

Lastly, some of the custom stuff is cheaper to do when The car is apart, thing like the cowl, drip rails, subframes, rear wheelhousings all would have to be done by pulling stuff apart. In this case, it was as far apart as possible.

Yeah Nick. Got the engine and trans out of 450 89 5.0 rust bucket in Vermont, including wiring harness and all accessories. That was one hard car to pull apart (rusted together...what is it about Mustangs and Rust?). For those that have heard of the Grassroots Motorsports $200x Challenge. Nick and I built a 88 notchback for the race, did OK and then removed it for a future project.

Hey Rusty,

wanted to see if you could give me some guidance on the drip rail shaving or repairing.

I am in the middle of restoring my 67 fastback and have it on the rotissiere.

I had some rust in the door opening where the drip rail piece wraps underneath and plug welds to door opening. The rust wasn't terrible but had a few holes thru the drip rail piece underneath as well as the base metal for the opening.

I had planned to cut out both layers and weld in a couple patches but after removing some of the drip rail piece underneath it has more corrision than I expected. I am trying to figure out should I try and patch them, replace them completely or shave them.

To patch them will be tough since I would need to trim out the entire a pillar piece from underneath and would likely have to butt weld them back together in the actual drip rail seam and that would probably be a nightmare to grind smooth and make look right.

To replace the entire drip rail(they do have replacements) I can see how the rails attach underneath at both pillars but in the middle of the door it looks like the lip is vertical and slides between the roof structure and roof. Not sure how I can remove that and would removing the roof be required to do that?

The last option is to shave them and I kind iof have mixed feelings on this. The cars you have done look pretty slick but I was hoping to not make drastic mods to the care although I probably will never sell it.

If I shave them I should drill out the spot welds and remove the part of the rail that plug welds in the dopr opening. then trim close to car with body saw or die grinder/cut off wheel then gring the area down flush and but weld the panels together. Working a small section at a time. That sound about right.

Any advice or info is appreciated, Mike

It was on hold for a little while but we now have it on a rotisserie to clean up the bottom and epoxy prime.

I like the look without the drip rails so I would cut them off and patch whatever is needed under them. You could get new drip rails (have never put them on so not sure if they will fit) but you have to make sure and put them in the right place or your trim under the roof rail weatherstrip won't fit. Also replacement drip rail trim that I have seen is thinner and does not want to fit.

I just sent Rusty a rear valence, decklid and doors from NPD. Yesterday, I picked up an 8.8 I had narrowed. It is from an Explorer with 3.73s and discs.

Some incremental progress!

That is kind of what I was wondering Nick but I don't keep up on early Mustangs to know if that year/model was available. . My uncle did a 66 Fastback that was severely rotted and his build cost was in the 6 figures. It was all shop built but the body shop bill on those kinds of cars is crazy due to the insane amount of hours.

I think Dynacorn is going to come out with one but that sure doesn't help you know. Good luck with the build, I will be following along.

It has a 347/AOD in it. It is a stock style suspension with standard upgrades from years ago. For the amount he has in it today you could build a much nicer car underneath. The inside/outside is gorgeous. I just need to introduce him to DSE now. ;)

This project has been on hold for awhile but it is time to finish it so we got it out of storage and into the fab shop. The first thing Brian did was line up the deck lid.

He had to do a little cutting and welding on it and I did the bodywork and sprayed two coats of SPI epoxy.

After Brian did a lot of measuring he found out they would fit without modifying the brace.
