I was looking at getting an AGR steering box and was wondering which is more popular the 12:1 version or the Variable 16/3:1? Does each one have its own advantages/disadvantages?

I'm not sure whats most popular but i run the 12:1. maybe a quick pole of what most here are running would answer your question

I've got the variable but only because I caught it at half price. No regrets so far.

Do a search for Lee Steering boxes or call 818-768-0371. Best box on the market, I am gonna get both my caprice and my Monza box set up for 12 to 1 and then Ill know my steering is good.

you should use what is right for the application not what is popular, that being said give us some info on the car and what your plans are, will it be just a cruiser or is performance important, will the car see competition?

Car is just a street no competition. Really just looking for what is the primary use that each box is intended for. I dont have Lee box kind of money thats why I plan to go with AGR.

I bought one of the Lee Performance boxes, outstanding IMO
The AGR box is $350 (looks like an 800 series), Lee 800 series is $420, the Lee 670 series w/rack & pinion valving is another $100. I would put money on the Lee 800 over the AGR, just for the blueprinting they perform.
The Monte SS steering box, stock, is the 12:1 ratio, a rebuild kit, $50, a NAPA rebuilt box $170 +/-.
You may be able to use one of those, and save more $, and later get the Lee box.

I have heard of so many people having issues with AGR boxes, save a little more buy the Lee box/have him build your existing box, its worth it.

I've had two different issues with two different AGR boxes for my Chevy truck.

Sounds like I may need to rethink my options. I'd like to get a Lee or ATS box but the money is just not there.

Lee Builds the ATS boxes. Well worth the money. No matter what, make sure the pump is set to properly flow to the box or you will burn it up ASAP!!
