View Full Version : 1967 Cougar suspension

Alright, so I just picked up a 67 Cougar, and was wondering what kind of aftermarket is out there for suspension on these cars? The car is presently set up as a drag car with slapper bars and all. Not sure if that matters, but I would like to give the car a lower stance and ALOT tighter suspension. The front brakes have already been switched over to later Cougar discs. Any links would be much appreciated, I did a search for it and didn't come up with a lot.

Total Control Products is the best out there. Below are some links to G Link (4 link) rear suspension, Front Coil over connversion, Control Arms, Rack and Pinion kits.

The TCP stuff is nice. I think Maximum Motorsports makes some nice bits as well, and if I am not mistaken Agent-47.

Remember, anything that works on a 67 Mustang will work on your Cougar.

Except for the rear suspension. Cougars gained 3 inches in the back. I believe the gain is split between the front and rear of the rearend.

Thanks for the input guys, that G-link is nice, does anyone else make a link kit like that? How about brake kits? Who has the big brake kits for these cars?

Remember, anything that works on a 67 Mustang will work on your Cougar.
the tcp stuff is nice, but the MM and agent-47 are all late mustang parts.

We have Wilwood kits, and 3 other brands.

This is the only G Link we sell and install. There may be others available but we know this one is awesome.

Griggs is also a good option. But those are the only double a-arm suspensions out there. A few strut companies, but struts arent the best for handling.

Best boltin by far is TCP. Or build your own like I did.

If you are looking for a more stock option, look into global west suspension, we have their upper control arms with the negative roll system on our 68 Cougar. The stance of it looks great and its a simple weekend project. Total control products makes almost the exact same product as the global west upper control arms, I think the Global West stuff is fairly similarly priced. It also has a flaming river power steering box with a quicker ratio. We put some higher spring rate front springs and a full polyurethane bushing kit on it.Total control products makes a subframe connector system that we've installed on both the Cougar and on our 67 Mustang that is a pretty slick and worthwhile install. Other than that just some big sway bars and the car handles like a go-cart. The Cougar has never seen the track or been autocrossed, however, I wouldn't hesistate to get after it at the track. I'm not sure what your budget or goals are, but for quick bolt on stuff, I can tell you that this setup performs nicely.

Check out the New TCI unit. It is priced good and they have bolt-in mounts for Windsors, 4.6L. FE blocks and 460. They have a neat new torque arm rear suspension too.

Not for the early cars True. Just '79-present Mustangs. Fox Chassis('78-'93), SN95('94-'04), and S197('05-'10)

Remember, anything that works on a 67 Mustang will work on your Cougar.

Isnt TCI just a mustang II?

MustangIIs are not the best geometry.

The TCI kit may not have any "Mustang II" parts in it and they have their own special spindles just like their customs ifs and heidts superide II and chassisworks g machine setup but all of these kits are based off of MII geometry. which was a great alternative to the stock geometry back in the day but their are so many better suspension designs available. now dont get me wrong I have put countless "modifed" MII suspensions in early mustangs comets falcons and such and they drive much better than the stock setup and they are a great way to get rid of the dang shock towers but i cant stand it when these companies try to pass off the "there are no MII parts on our kits" line. just because the may not ressemble a factory MII setup doesnt mean they arent just a MII in a "costume". TCP is the best setup if you dont mind keeping the shock towers. I am a dealer for all the above named companies and can save you some money if your interested.

Thanks for clarifying for me. But my kit is a little better than TCP, HAHA. If the geometry is MII than its MII. Is the spindle just a MII spindle geometry with the spindle moved up 2" for the drop?

I just want to set the record straight. Unfortunately, one of the media publications printed an article on our '64.5-'70 Mustang in July of '08 and they called it a Mustang II front end and ever since we have been trying to correct this mistake.

There would be no reason for us to build custom spindles, custom length control arms, custom steering arms, special UCA mounts, special LCA mounts, a special crossmember etc etc just to keep the same geometry as a MII. Especially since all those unnecessary custom parts would just drive up the retail price of the kit and the customer would still have MII performance. It seems to me/us that if the goal was to keep the MII geometry you would be better served by just adding a coilover to an existing MII parts inventory to keep the price low and call it a day.

We offer both MII and Custom IFS packages for many different vehicles so we can touch as many budgets and performance needs for our customer's as we possibbly can.

Like Tim already mentioned there is nothing Mustang II about the 'Custom IFS' for the early Mustang including the geometry.

The geometry utilized in the early Mustang kit is the same as what is in our Camaro that did so well in the '09 Super Chevy Handling Challenge. Check out the May issue of Super Chevy for what Mary has to say about our Camaro and watch for our '67 Fastback very soon.
