I just put in a new motor in my monte carlo....and mated it up to my built up 200R4 with a 2000-2200 stall converter....but my cam i way bigger than that in power band...and now my car wants to stall when it comes to a stop. someone told me that it is the stall converter doing that b/c the cam is too big for it. Im about to order a 2800-3000 stall....and the guy seemed to think that it would fix the problem. The cam I am running is the comp cam x274....230/236 duration at 50 and .488/.490 lift. and I have crappy vacuum so he things thats also a problem for the converter...

any ideas??

Sounds like a fuel problem not a converter problem.

Ditto... Fix the idle problem before you throw money at the converter. The converter is free wheeling at an idle and will not effect it unless the car idles at 2300 RPM and is up against the converter all the time... A low vacuum signal has nothing to do with the converter either. Who is selling you this new "fix all your problems" converter? The guy you have been talking too? :scared:
Depending on where your torque numbers are I would think the current unit should work fine for a street car.

Are you certain the TV cable is properly adjusted?

What model carb is it?

Is it a lock up converter? If it's not disengaging properly, it'll stall or try and stall at low RPMs or at a standstill. Check the solenoid....your cam is not enormous so it shouldn't be the cause of your problems. Converter itself should be fine.

it is a lockup converter......what solenoid are you talking about???

Yep, I'd bet money on the lock-up solenoid. When I got my 200R4 (from a pos shop) they didn't replace the solenoid (among other things) and once locked, it wouldn't unlock until the car had been turned off and sat for a while. The engine would bog down and sputter until I got up to around 15mph. The solenoid is easy to replace and I think mine cost about 15 dollars. Unhook the wires going to your trans and if the problem goes away, it's the solenoid.

The poor idle problem could be something non-converter related like others have stated. However, I do think that you will benifit by installing a converter with a higher stall speed. Comp cams recomends a 2200+ for your cam, and these are a minimum needed. A bit more converter will improve your launch greatly. I've been banging gears on my tremec for about 4 years now, but I used to have a Th-350 with a B&M 2000 holeshot converter. At the time, I was running a 360 ci small block with Edelbrock performer rpm heads, a 235/235, .510/.510 (w/1.6 rockers) hydraulic roller and 3.70 rear gears. The car was a dog off the line, couldn't even spin the tires from a stop unless I did a brake-stand to get them spinning. It also wanted to pull through the brakes at stoplights, and didn't idle as well as it should have. A friend of mine had a very similar problem with his small block nova. It had a nice motor (355, AFR heads, xtreme energy 288 roller cam) and a stock th-350 and converter. It idled like crap until he installed his new trans and 3000 stall converter. That's a little more cam than you, but sounds like a similar problem. Good luck,
Andy

Geez now you guys are making me nervous. I have a 700r4 trans with about this same cam in a sb with 4.11's. I just bought a B&M 2400 rpm stall. I'm going to take it to the trans shop to install and add the 12v locking wire to the trans.

Wish me luck...
