Smedingperformance.com offers several crate engines including a 440hp 440ft/lbs 383 with roller cam and Performer RPM heads and air gap intake. It would fit within your budget even with shipping I am sure.

If I had a bigger budget I would have jumped on this, but I instead opted for their Magnum 350 which they are building for me now.

we bought the GM ZZ383/425 crate engine, it looks like a good package. We got it for 5k but spent more on valve covers, aluminum intake, aluminum water pump. Need headers that will work on the fast burn heads, they have tall exh ports.
We don't have it running yet.

I just bought the GM ZZ383 and paid $4930 delivered. It's sitting in my shop waiting for all the other chassis things to happen. It's all brand new, and if you look at the parts list from the GM performance book it should be a good balance of performance and reliability. I want to drive the car, not just repair it all the time. The secret is going to be the induction system. Can't wait to drive it.

We are getting ready to do some dyno testing on our ZZ383. Our new manifold will rock on it!

I am now considering purchasing this engine. David and others, what are your impressions? 1/4 mile times? reliability? rpm max? regrets? etc......

Please help, there are no reputable machine shops around here either.

You might want to give Tom Nelson a call (818)998-5593 (http://www.nelsonracingengines.com)and tell him what you want and your budget. He usually does high end stuff, but always looks to help guys out with other combos. Leave a message or send an email since he is really hard to get a hold of.
