View Full Version : 69 ZL1 clone w/LS7

04-28-2009, 11:47 AM
May not be a true PT car, I wanted to complete an "easy" LS7/T56 Conversion, so it would ready for our 5/2 open house, and just 15 weeks later (including rotisserie resto), here it is...
Powertrain
- 2007 LS7 Dry Sump Engine
- Stock LS7 Pan (for now)
- Speed Inc LS7 Grind
- Kooks LS7 Retrofit Headers -Fabricated 4" Induction
- GTO T56 Transmission
- LS7 Clutch
- Baffled OE 69 Tank w/LS7 in-tank Pump
- Factory Camaro 12 Bolt Posi
Chassis/Suspenion
- Built to 1969 ZL1 OE specs
- OE Disk Brakes (for now)
- OE 15" Wheels, MT ET Street Rear Tires w/Redlines added, MT Front Radials

Interior
-1969 Code 711 Black Standard -Interior

-Repro 1969 Camaro Radio, w/Ipod connection
-Floor shifter w/stock bezel,
-NO console or Gauges,
-Factory 1969 Camaro w/SW Greenline Tach
-Original Seat Covers, w/new or restored hardware
Exterior
-Rotisserie Restored by
Classic Cars of Mchenry County (http://camarosrestored.com/)-1969 Code 71 Lemans Blue
-15" Steel Wheels w/OE "Poverty" Center Caps
- Redline Radial Tires
- Rear Modified MT ET Street Radials
- Stock Appearing 1969 ZL1 Camaro in every way

Just needs the 3" SS exhaust, an alignment, and dyno tuning to be finished. I may be upgrading to 17" replica base wheels and bigger brakes, but for now, it retains the stock brakes.

I was wondering what cross member you used with your GTO 6 speed? I have an 05 LS2 6 speed pull out I am putting in a 68 camaro. I am going for the sleeper look with mine also.

what size are the MT radials on the back?

04-28-2009, 03:03 PM
Tank is a Spectra Performance
Crossmember is a BMR, (which we sell) but we still had to modify it
MT are 235/60/15's

I wouldnt be sure about the sound. It has open headers right now along with one of our more aggressive LS7 grinds and it is indistinguishable from and old school motor...

Cool. I'd rather have a 427 copo style 69 than any other.

Get the rear rims widened for some bigger rubber!

04-28-2009, 06:38 PM
If/when I go with the replica steel wheels, they will be wider along with the hoops.

I see you used the G-bar on your Camaro. I have one on my 67FB (http://speedinc.com/ptsc/67GT500.cfm) (http://speedinc.com/ptsc/67GT500.cfm), How do you like it?

I dunno yet, not on the road quite yet. Still have a number of things to do + electrical. Considering how the car drove before, I can't see how I couldn't be ecstatic.

Perfect. A sleeper 427 is the only 69 Camaro I'd own. I'll be very happy only going one direction fast.

OK COOOOL I didnt see any mention of cam in the parts list so I "ASS-U-ME-D" it was stock(not that a stock LS7 is a bad thing)

When you say you modified the crossmember, exactly what was done? Thinking of ordering a BMR one but just want a freakin crossmember that will bolt up and work. Not very happy with my S&P, Classic 5 speed doesn't want to sell just the crossmember, ATS is not available. That leaves BMR and ????? So, how you like it? Thanks!

Looks awesome, been thinking I would like to do the same one day but had planned a carb intake with efi throttle body to further the look right down to factory finishes

The trans mount location needed to be farther back. This was because the Kooks motor mounts probably sit farther back than most others.

WE need to cut a coil out of it to get the height right, but the thing sounds just like it should, deep, fairly quiet, with a nice lope.

Seriously B-A-D-A-S-S. Want.

That's the sweetest type of COPO clone (read: LS7) one can build in my opinion. Awesome sleeper, Tom!

Same plan here. For me at least, it would be nice to utilize as many parts as possible that would imitate the COPO look underhood.

I also really like the redlines and the understated interior. :twothumbs

Obviously this style car never could use the huge brakes the guys do with 18"-20" wheels, but with those 17" replicas you mentioned Tom, it sure gives some nice options in the brake and tire department while keeping those cool dog dish 'caps.

I'm waiting for one of these COPO clones to get the full PT suspension treatment underneath so it performs at the track like one of the super badd 1st gens...Bad Penny, DSE's '69 etc.

But it keeps its super sleeper exterior just like yours Tom... only lower! :)

FWIW We cut a coil out today, and the front end height is much better, more pics soon.

Actually the do. I have like 3 sets of originals, and we just polished and repainted a set for this car.

Your 15" setup looks so good Tom I would think switching to 17" wheels and tires isn't a slam dunk decision.

What did you have in mind here?

compos mentis
05-05-2009, 09:27 AM
Just a few things I've thought about doing on one of my own.

I'd imitate it by using a carb style intake and the Retrotek carb look EFI system

http://www.retrotekspeed.com/products/powerjection-iii/

with the COPO style air cleaner over it. Hide the coil packs, use some chrome valve covers that kind of thing. I'm sure there a lot more little tweaks but you get the idea.

05-05-2009, 09:32 AM
I used the BB heater core, GM hoses, tower clamps, etc, thought about painting block orange, carb style EFI with BB air cleaner, but just didnt pull the trigger.

I chose to stay away from chrome and polish. I like a factory installed type of look better. Most of our customers do not, but we build em both ways :)

Tom, is this a keeper or a seller?

Was the car done in time for the open house?

How'd it go?

05-05-2009, 09:46 AM
just needs an alignment, and some road time.

Didnt build it with plans to sell it, but who knows...

Forgot to mention that I used LED lighting throughout, and it has HID's.

good luck Tom. Can we get some info on the 010 project or is that under wraps for now?

So far we have installed a Magnacharger TVS2300 unit on the stock car. Ran 11.8 @119mph. Dynoed 518/486 to the wheels.

Just pullied it up and upgraded the fuel system and it needs to get back on the dyno.

Going to try and push the limits of the 2300 while keeping it a comfortable driver. It will probably end up being a turbo car someday like most of our stuff ;)

Ohhhhhh it's an 2010 Camaro. OK I thought you guys were just building a new project for the year 2010. Still sweet though. Glad to see the new Camaro moving fairly well so far. Who has the fastest one in the country to date, any idea?
