First off it was great seeing some of you at the show. The weather was ok and the autocross was a blast.

Penny ran good and the new bar worked wonders (thanks Dave!). Everyone had a blast and nobody crashed.

I wanted to practice a new pan blur technique I learned, so I though I would share a couple of the hundreds of shots I took.

Tomorrow should be even funner. ;)

First up, Larry Callahan.. he won the award for Cool Camaro. Sure looked nice going around the track.

Getting down in a budget Nova.. caution, flying cone!

Kyle Tucker in his super double throwdown badass 2nd gen. I do believe it was the fastest car of the day...
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/03/msobkj-1.jpg

Jim Shipka and his one lap car. Jim ended up winning the Mighty Muscle award.. a pretty big deal. Congrats!
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/03/2uy4q3k-1.jpg

Stacy Tucker of DSE flogging her 69 Camaro.. This year she is sporting a peppy little 416 inch LS3 from Mast Motorsports.

It takes stones to autocross a REAL 68 Z28 crossram Camaro..

Bret from Air Ride Technologies showing that air-sprung cars can navigate the cones too.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/03/nl20jl-1.jpg

And we were all in awe of Mary Pozzi and her mad driving skills. She looked to be the fastest through the sweeps and she turned in the fastest time of the day of those in the competition. That girl can DRIVE!

Great pictures Steve. Larry's hood looks buckled on the passenger side. Hope it is just an illusion.

Not an illusion...

He's still running the damaged hood from SEMA (the one that melted and cracked due to turbo "issues")

A new one is on the way.

Thanks for the comments on the photos, pan blurs are tough to nail with a lot of movement, so I'm pretty happy.

I hope someone got video.. I did get some on my GoPro..

Great pictures as always Steve.

Steve kind of glossed over his increadible win in the Editors Challenge. After setting the bar VERY low almost out of the show (low being good, of course) he was pressed by pass after pass of other guys getting quicker and quicker. With only four (or so) laps to go he was dethroned with by a blazing pass; the next pass (not by Steve was quicker still). Finally, on the last pass of the event, Bad Penny (with Steve at the wheel) does the low lap of the event (which I think should have held up for the low lap of the day overall at that point)! It was a great display and the crowd ate up the tension at the end!!!

I was flattered by the award for Muscle Machine of the Year (as the years first finalist). The actual award is chosen until the end of the year but to be named as the finalist from the event was really an honor.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow to try to improve on my Autocross times so we'll see how it goes.

And to mirror Steve's initial sentiments, it was great having the opportunity to meet and talk to everybody from the forums - lurkers and active posters alike. There were lots of great cars and it was a lot of fun!

See everybody tomorrow! :)

It was good to see so many members out there today. I got to see Steve pull-off the win in the autocross at the last minute in the Editor's Challenge. Penny looked very smooth on the course. I saw Liz Miles on the course and heard Mary Pozzi being talked about but didn't get to see her drive. Larry, I didn't get a chance to talk to you, but Motiv8r is amazing. What a beautifully executed car. Plus it was good to get to talk face to face with some of our Vendors: Jon from Driverz Inc., Jason Rushforth, Chris Fesler, etc. Anyone who is the area I would suggest you get out there tomorrow. It is well worth it.

I second everyhing that has been said about the event. Congrats to Steve, James (sorry about the name thing), Larry and Mary. It was nice meeting and talking with you all yesterday. Beautiful pictures of the two cars James.
David it was nice to meet you and talk with you. Mary, I can't thank you enough for allowing my wife, Melissa, to ride along with you. She was giddy with excitement after the run. She had tears of joy and excitement from laughing so much. She's hooked!! The plan had worked! We'll be seeing you in Monterey. Better get out there and work on the car.
Thanks again to all.

I have video of your car Steve, going to edit and up-load them in a bit. The picture you took of my Nova is sweet! Makes it look way badass.

What were your guy's/gal's times. My best was a 32.4xx, not to shabby for a 6k Nova; with 360 tread wear tires to boot! Speaking of which, I need to get some new tires before the Del Mar event!

Once again it was a blast being there and meeting you all. Can't wait for next time!

Unfortunatly, I had to leave the show early, but caught the first round. I didn't have time to check out all the vender booths. I would have liked to say hi to everybody. Maybe Del Mar.
For those who have never watched the aurocross at a Good Guys show, do yourself a favor and go. It's one of the best things that could have happened to The Good Guys shows as well as pro-touring in general. :twothumbs

A touch bigger my friend. I think that the estimate was something in the neighborhood of 1250 cars or so... It was an increadibly enjoyable show and was very laid back and without any (apparent to me) drama. The autocross was really fun and open to everyone yet people got to make lots of passes. Really fun.

That was cool! what was the the knocking / rubbing sound on the turns?

The jury is out right now... I have some ideas but a big part of it (I think) is related to how/where the camera was mounted (in so much as it makes it sound much worse than it did in the car)... in the car it sounded nowhere near as dramatic. Hopefully it can get sorted out before Del Mar...

What a great weekend, it was so good meeting everyone from the boards. I wish I could have given more rides.

Oh, and Carl C's Camaro is pretty damn cool, and it sounds great with the Magnacharger.

It's cool that most of the PT type cars at the event were being abused rather than parked. Good showing guys!

Can't wait until Del Mar. Since I don't have to worry about getting a good time rides will be available to anyone that shows up.

Thanks Steve! The driver needs a lot of help though. For my first time on an autocross I sure did get more than my fair share of raping, pillaging, and plundering of cones.

I am very impressed with Penny and your driving. It was deceptive how fast your times were since there was so little drama vs. the DSE cars and the other fast competitors,

I got a hall pass yesterday morning and hung out with the guys (and gals!!) as well. I expected to see Jimmy/Deb and Steve there, but it was an added and wonderful suprise to see Carl, Larry, Mary and Dave, (and my bud's from BOS with Greg Blundell too!) all of whom have been friends for years, and all of whom are absolutely wonderful people. Very cool! Got some good rides from the guys, and some good data as a result.

The Autocross was a really, really welcome addition. I love nice cars, but car shows bore me pretty quickly independent of how many nice rides there are. Having them run is a huge plus, and I am GLAD they will be doing this in Del Mar in a few weeks too, we hadn't had that in the past.
Pro Touring is a pretty small community, and with few exceptions, the folks that run with our crowd are truly awesome individuals. Now many more of the cars are being driven in anger, and that's a great thing, as that's a huge part of what the hobby segment is all about.

Jim and I were reflecting on how influential Carl's car is to so many of us. No question Dave and Mary's influence as well, I have been following these three folks for nearly ten years!!! Jim made the point that Big Red was thought to be the "father" of PT, but I'd agree with him that it's more Carl's awesome car that influenced the hobby. You won't meet a nicer guy, or one that is more willing to share his honest experiences. The new engine has me changing my mind all over again, the thing idled like a little kitten, and just made awesome, smooth, simple power. Terrific package!!!

So, everyone always goes on about Mary's driving skills. You know what? They are right. There were a lot of fast cars there, that cost a LOT of money to build, and have a LOT of power, huge tires, brakes. In comparison, her car was seriously out-gunned, 3500 pounds, iron small block, modest tire sizes, etc. Leaf springs of all things, basically a bolt on package that is well tuned and sorted. Hanging, within tenths of a second with the DSE heavy hitter second gen (which was the best sounding car of the event in my opinion, Kyle was drving that thing to the limit on every run, beating the crap out of it which was cool), and a C5 Z06. Think about that. Sticker on the fender says it all, Drag Racing is for Fast Cars, Autocrossing is for Fast Drivers. And a smile on her face after every run!

I am glad that I made the time to attend, it reminded me of how I need to further simplify my life so I can spend more time with the hobby. Also made me realize that I need to find more time to spend finishing my own cars!!!

Cheers,
Mark

Mark,
Great visiting with you again!
I agree that Carl's car has made a great contribution to Pro-Touring. He's kept the car very streetable with conservative ride heights and no minitubs, stock subframe but very well thought out upgrades. The car looks great, and handles VERY well. He just keeps refining it and all in a do-it-yourself fashion. I wish I had gotten more time to ride with him and help out. Both days went by so fast I can't believe it!

I finally got one run in at the end of Sunday with Mary's Camaro and it was easy to drive. I ran a 30.2 if I remember right. I'm very proud of Mary and her Camaro it's been a team effort for us to get the 73 working right, and her driving just keeps getting better and better.

I'm also very thrilled to see Steve Rupp do so well. Who knew he's such a hot-shoe? Really, the pressure was on and Steve hung in there and didn't choke.

Nick got the short end of the stick by drawing the DSE 69. Normally a well dialed in car, it was understeering quite a bit due to the new lighter engine and weight loss.

Thanks to all the members who came by and said hi. It was all a bit overwhelming to say the least.

This Custom Buick was my favorite at the show and it was also in the winners circle. I was introduced to the owners Joe and Nancy at the show thru my friend Rob. Super nice couple and friendly as can be. But unfortunately they were involved in a hit and run after the show on Sunday. From what Rob has told me, Joe and Nancy are OK, but the car has some pretty bad damage. I hope they get her back up and running looking better than new.

I had a great time Saturday and Sunday and met a lot of nice people, it was very nice of Mary to take the kids for a ride and cant thank her enough, My 12 yr old girl asked Mom if we can build her a car now, I think Amy looks good in a second gen.

I swear i will run my car at the next event i go to, I'm still fighting brake problems and hope to solve it inthe next few weeks, If I can talk my wife into it I may be able to do one day at Delmar.

Here are 2 pictures of Mary and Amy, I have a lot more but Iwill give them to Larry to go through and post up.

Come on down to Del Mar.. it's a very nice location. You can have some rides in Penny.

Also, loved your car and it's most definetly on our "shoot list" now. Make sure you get your contact info over to Nick or myself. Nice to meet ya.

Thanks guys, but I'm just a fellow addict. If my experiences can help someone else avoid the same pain I have gone through, then all is good. I have learned far more than I could ever hope to give back.

Group hug?

Mary is da bomb. However, I can't wait for the day that David finishes his 1st gen and there is a Pozzi Shootout at one of these events! That should prove to be very interesting at the end of the day.

How did our 66 Chevelle do? I haven't talked to the guys yet, they are flying back today. I was wondering how the new 383 performed.

Like this. Bret is a mad man!

Thanks for the kudos, Carl. I've gotta admit that it's that tomato red car that makes me look so good. Having something so confirmed that anybody could drive well is pretty cool.

Keep Dave prodded as I'd love to see the '67 finished so he can enjoy some fun with his own car. That car has been sitting on stands for so long the bases are imprinted into the concrete slab. Of course, second gens do rule but then he already knew that ... **nudge, nudge, wink, wink ...**.

Cheers,

Mary Mary Mary. Now you have to own up to it, even if it wretches your soul. It's the flames. It's all about the flames. No amount of stickers can cover up and hold down the aura of their magnificence.

I'll donate a couple of days in May if David is up to wrenching during the week. I have to go to Chemical Lime in Salinas around then.

If memory serves Brett did a 30.4XX on his last run of the day.

Hey Carl,

You're on for those days in May and we'll have fun twisting wrenches.

And I try to forget about those ghost flames. The only time I like to see flames is if the car is on fire as that means job security for me. Especially if it's a late-model FORD with all their inherent electrical issues and the NHTSA Recalls that soon follow ...

Cheers,
Mary Pozzi

Had a great time at my first Good Guys-Costa Mesa autocross event and was so happy with how my '73 ran, turned, stopped, and anything else it does or should do that I've left out. As the majority of my Camaro's suspension is Hotchkis Performance, they asked me to come represent their company at the autocross.

The Camaro received a lot of attention mainly for what it's NOT ... like in not a high-dollar build, or equipped with an aftermarket subframe, nor has the huge horsepower or other parts that usually are seen on those ubercars we read about and lust after. What was impressive were the overall times everyone turned and the ability to "go low" when it mattered. Detroit Speed & Engineering and RideTech brought both of their cars and I can't say enough about the driving abilities of everyone that piloted them. Kyle and Stacy Tucker, and Bret Voelkel are incredible behind the wheel and turned quick times on every run. After the first day, Kyle edged me by a couple of tenths. On Sunday, both of us "went low" and we both got down to 29.1's. As I haven't seen the final times, I've got no idea who went "lower" but it doesn't really matter as we both were fast. As GoodGuys allowed anything that was powered by something American, a late-model Z06 beat us both but by only 2 tenths (28.9). Kept telling this guy he should be stomping us by a full second with all that modern technology plus being a Corvette but Kyle and I worked hard and kept him honest. Kyle also gave me a ride in his second-gen and I now have a full-blown case of engine lust and envy!!!!! That car is wicked fast! Now I must play the Lotto ...

I'm pretty proud of my car as it does very well for having a stock-type suspension with bolt-on parts. This car is nothing fancy yet very confirmed in it's job. It was a pleasure telling people that it's such an easy, predictable car to drive with no surprises and thanks to Hotchkis for having some awesome suspension and steering systems in place to make it so compliant. This is the type of car that can be driven well by almost anyone and how cool is that???

Thanks also go to Kumho Tires and to Chris Alston's Chassisworks. Kumho gave me a smokin' deal on a set of Ecsta XS's and they are phenomenal. An aggressive-treaded tire that's a perfect companion for any suspension system, they're great for street driving and are very competitive for weekend autocross competition. Chris Alston provided a set of double-adjustable VariShocks for the '73. I installed these about a month before Good Guys, drove it a bit on the street, and stayed at minimal settings for bump and rebound. Tim McCain, Chassisworks, was there and encouraged me to go up on both, drive and see what it felt like, and then experiment some more. I ended up somewhere in the middle for adjustment range and will have to count the "clicks" backwards to see what I ended up with. As the times were good and the car felt great, I'll probably keep these settings for Del Mar. What was cool is I made an adjustment change (two clicks) and the driver's seat "butt-dyno" could feel that change in transitional handling. Again, very cool ...

Here's some other cool shots of various and sundry players at the autocross event.

Steve Rupp, Camaro Performers, in the Editor's Challenge (he won with a last mad course attack ...)
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/03/DSC_0008-1.jpg

While it didn't turn the fastest time, it shows that most anything can run an autocross course. While it obviously wasn't the fastest through the cones, I loved it!!
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/03/DSC_0012-1.jpg

Here's Nick Licata from Camaro Performers attacking the course in the DSE/Stacy Tucker '69. He was soooo close but finished third.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/03/DSC_0195-1.jpg

And here's Jim Campisano, Super Chevy, giving a huge thumbs-up and grins after being the runner-up in the Editor's Challenge using Kyle Tucker's Camaro.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/03/DSC_0206-1.jpg

Bret Voelkel from AirRide/RideTech loaned the Chevelle for the Editor's Challenge. I drove this car and loved it. The spectators also loved it when the engine stalled at the Finish "Stop" and I couldn't figure out how to get the shifter back into Park. Too many levers and toggles ... and Bret saved my day and his transmission.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/03/DSC_0099-1.jpg

And one more of "The Best Car in the entire World." Just because I can ...

I must say that it was a pleasure to watch you race Mary. So fluid, little bit of over-steer, not stomping on "the skinny pedal on the right". You showed that smooth IS fast.

I can't leave Rupp out of this either. He looked much smoother than a lot of the others out there. No tire squeal, those Kumhos look to be amazing tires.

How did that gold T/A do?

ok I guess. 33.41x

Here's more than you wanted to know :)

Day 1:
- 38.xxx stopped before stop box
- 35.1xx trying to get a feel for the line
- 34.1xx clean, but felt sloppy in places - good stop at end
- 36.xxx braked while transitioning weight and slid car a bit . . . slid all over nonsupportive bucket seat
- 34.737 some understeer in a couple places and a bad line
- 34.551 got into chicane corner too deep and lost speed

Day 2:
- 33.9xx nice and clean first pass; apexes were closer to correct
- 33.9xx sloppier than previous run; later on the brakes at end
- 33.4xx things went well with no bad understeer
- 33.5xx a bit of plowing in the longer corners
- 34.2xx + 3 the cone-eating run . . . 3 down :machine:
- 33.7xx got off of the first long corner well and carried to much speed into the next
- 33.9xx didn't set car up well for exiting corners
- 34.5xx like run before but worse; car incredibly hot from running heater to help cool the engine
- 34.0xx a good run until massive understeer in second long corner
- 33.7xx pretty average run having a bit more fun on the throttle

In a curious twist Hunkins didn't show up the editors challenge.. actually neither did Liz until the very end. Even though both were there.

The Laguna and the Chevelle were MIA at the event.. g/28 was there but was getting a Tiger Cage installed on Saturday. It ran on Sunday but suffered (from what I hear) massive wheel hop.

After seeing all the cool autocrossing, I plan on taking the Pontiac out on the track at Del Mar. Before I do, I'd love to get an idea of how it is as a passenger in your car Steve. That's if the offer is still available?

Street Machine Joy Wheaton 00 Mustang 31.173

Funny thing about this time here, and it had me confused for a few minutes is that I met Joy Wheaton while at the event she was usually one car in front or behind me in line so we talked a lot. She never got down to that time. She was consistently in the 33-34 second range but was getting better as she got more runs in (as we all did, my fastest time was my last run!). I started to think maybe her fastest time was a glitch in the timing computer, then I realized that one of her runs, she wasn't driving. I believe she had John Marcone? drive the car to show her a few pointers with her riding shotgun.

Hope to see Joy again at the next local event, she was fun to talk with at Costa Mesa/Del Mar.

It's cool to see all the times and were we stood amongst friends.

Yesss, fiiinaallly.

. . . I could have sworn that was a 33.41, not a 33.47. Grrrrr, maybe Chad misread it, or I misheard.

Is that John Marcone, or Marconi. I thought, or perhaps was hoping he was related to the museum and such.

Not bad for my first autocross, and tires like rocks!
