Has anyone put speakers in the dash of a 69 Camaro ?
And NOT in the center hole , but outboard , towards the doors.
It would require ( Aghast......) cutting holes in the original dash.

I was thinking of putting some 3.5" or maybe 4x6" speakers in these areas.
Isn't this a better location than the kick panels ?
Or Not ?

I had speakers in the kick panels of another 69 Camaro I used to have and they were in the way of the emergency brake .
Plus , you really couldn't hear them that well.
I just figured the speakers being mounted at ear level and the sound bouncing off the windshield might be better.

Any suggestions ?

My car Fuel has some interesting speaker placement, in the stock center under dash area there are two 4"-5" speakers and in the front side dash vents, left and right (towards doors) there are some tweeters. I don't know any of the specific specs. on the speakers. I do know crystal clear sound that goes way loud....

That sounds like a good idea.
Thanks.

I am running 2 4 inch JL Audio in the center of the dash. Since I am running a vintage air unit, I made pods to hold the 5.25 JL's in the cowl. Cut a stock non-air kick panel to cover them. Where the vent controls were, made a plate to mount the seperate tweeters.

You cannot tell unless you see the tweeters that I have any speakers up front and it would not interfere with the E brake. The 5.25 play through the stock non-air vent holes in the kick panels.

I have 6x9's mounted under the rear deck with preforated holes in the rear cover. 10 inch sub firing through the rear seat.

Sounds really good sitting, but my car is so over the top loud when it is driving it is hard to appreciate how good it does sound.

I will have two five inch coaxial speakers in the factory dash location, and then I am running 6.5 mids and tweets in the kicks as well.

How in the world are you guys running speakers that large in the center dash area??? I would love to see a picture from the windshield in so I can see how you did this and an explanation. I haven't gotten to this point yet but it won't be long. I like planning ahead for these things ya know!!

Mounted underneath the dash, side by side (as opposed to front to back). If I took a pic from above
it would look stock.

SO actually you had to make a bracket to keep the speakers from laying on the dash surface and low sound to flow easily from the factory outlet? This would make the speakers be partially covered by the dash itself right? But they sound good like this!

I think what your saying is correct, they don't mount to the dash sort of float below it. Sound very good.

Dont put anything in the dash, you want it in the kicks to be right but it takes some time to build them right. You need to build a fiberglass kick pod and place your speakers in it sealed to get a good mid bass, place the tweeter at the lowest point you can facing at the inner ear of the opposite seat. This will give you the perfect sound. I have been building systems in cars for years and this will give you the best sound. I have some in a Camaro as well but have to get the pictures. I can sell you a pair if you cant build them yourself that I will make fit into my car and you can bolt them into yours.

Wow Chris looks awesome! I'm curious what would you charge for a set of kick-panels say for a 69 Camaro w/o air?

The question everyone want to know, it usually takes about a day-day and a half to build them so they are not cheap and depending on what you want them to look like will depend on the cost. I would say that I can build them from $350 to $850 depending on how nice you want them and what they are built out of. I can build them to my car and send them raw for you to wrap or we can build them and wrap them in leathe or what ever you want. If they were easy you would see them in all cars so that lets you know you will truly get a custom built piece. here is a rough idea on how we do it.

How would you do it for other cars though? I'm down for a set of those for my 69 Nova. Shouldn't be too much of a difference from a 69 Camaro, but I'm just curious how you'd do it for cars you don't have?

A lot of car stereo shops can make them. Just go see them. We like having the car so there are no issues with fitting right.

Really depends on what you are trying to do with your car, keep it original,or mod it in some way.

These are readily available for 1st gens/2nd gens and come in any color you can imagine. As for the speakers in the center..its actually a great idea, as it is a "center channel" much the same as your surround sound at home. Put some component sets in your kick panels and these in the dash and your imaging will be greatly improved as well as volume.

I used these and since I dropped the ball on the first post...I called and asked if they were still available.

QL-U5001 available in 5 colors. These are best used in applications where the original panel is mostly flat. Which is the case of the first gens. They trim easily and are a huge improvement. And if you dont like them...they are less than 200 bux usually compared to the 800-1200 youll spend having the work done.

Speak to Mark when you call...he is a great guy...405-624-6722

You can look here and see what I had DSE do, 5 in the dash and 6 1/2 in teh kicks. I do not want big kick panels in my car and do not want them to stick out any. Will this hurt some of the SQ, yes but thats why I have both. We will see how it works but I think that it will be fine. I am not taking this car to any IASCA comps.....
