i'm trying to find the easiest/cheapest way to upgrade the axle in my g-body. i know the old a-body rears can be used but the upper control arm mounts don't properly mount up. what about a 90's b-body? i know the caprice 8.5in rear used a 5x5 lug bolt pattern but i'll be changing axles anyway, so i'll fix that. but will the control arms, springs and shocks line up and work?

Not going to work as far as mounts. Its also more than likely too wide to.

the width doesn't bother me as a need wheel spacers anyway, but since the mounts won't line up, i guess it's back to square one. thank for the info

You could swap a 12 bolt with these (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/G-Body-Malibu-12-bolt-Swap-Upper-Dbl-Adj-Control-Arm_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33583QQihZ009QQitem Z190214905419QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW) modified upper control arms. I'm not sure which 12 bolt however.

Those arms are to swap a '64-'72 A-body rear into a G-body. The '64 and '65 rears are about an inch narrower on each end, IIRC. My '88 SS came with a 12-bolt from a '72 Chevelle, which I promptly sold since it was overkill for my car. I believe the rims that were on the car had ~5" backspacing and fit pretty well.

this was an attempt at a cheap replacement. if i go to a 12 bolt it'll almost certainly be a complete unit from someone like currie or moser. or building and modifying an 8.5in.
