I am a total newbie here i have a 68 camaro and i have being reading pages after pages of talk about what front subframe is better. I am trying to research what is best for me and this is what i would like. I would like to use this car as a cruiser/partial racer. I have a father in law with a new vette who despises old camaros. I want to prove to him that they can compete with his vette. I already have the Alston G-bar rear end, just figuring out what to do up front.

I live by Sacramento next to Alstons shop which saves on shipping and i like their stuff and i also like ATS kit but i want racki and pinion. DSE and AME just cost too much.

What can i do to shut him up?!

Why do you want rack and pinion? If you don't have the $$ for a DSE or AME frame you could always go with a ATS box and some AFX spindles.

Certainly the CA frame wouldl compliment the g-bar nicely, not to mention the simplicity of using the same vendor.

One option for you to look into is Speedtech's new sub. I also have the g-bar and just got the Speedtech frame and even though I haven't installed it in the car yet, the fabrication seems top notch and the package was fairly priced.

Give Frank over at Prodigy Customs a shout, he's a direct dealer with vast knowledge of all the subs mentioned.

I just have never been a fan of pitman arms, drag links, and steering boxes. Overtime there are too many oppotunities for play in each component. Rack and pinion just seems to be a bit stronger.

Speedtech uses a rear steer rack and pinoin correct? I am using an LS2 wouldn't it be better to have a front steer rack?

yes they use the Unisteer rack which can be installed on a stock subframe. You would need a modified or aftermarket oil pan. I have been considering this as an option but i haven't figured out which headers would work best with the setup yet.

Yes, Speedtech uses a rear steer rack, but I don't see why that would be an issue with your ls2. They use Steeroids and if you give Blake a call at Speedtech, he'll be able to tell you which headers will fit.

If i do end up going with the full subframe i will probablly go with chris alston just because i live so close and it will be easy to pick up and use them for tech help. I just want to make sure that whatever suspension i choose it is able to keep up with the new vette.

our sub will fit the LS2 with the ATS Pan and Motor mounts which we can add to the package, as for headers.... for now you will have to modify 1 tube on the driverside, we will be working on headers in the future but it is not that big a deal, and if you want air ride (not all do that for sure) it bolts in

most headers, we have tried a few different ones for big and small blocks, and to date all have needed one of the tubes modified to clear the steering shaft.

I have a Chris Alston Chassisworks sub-frame on my 69 Camaro and it looks great! I am in the process of doing the bodywork, so I have not tested it on the road.

Here’s some info from their installation guide: “The system accepts factory height (25.5”) tires, with up to 11” tire section width and 5’ wheel back spacing. Acceptable sizes include 275/45-16, 275/40-17, 275/35-18, 275/30-19 and 275/25-20. Note: 67-68 Camaro fenders may limit tire size to 9.5 inches”.

Hope this helps!
