suspension travel

on a daily driven vehicle, what kind of suspension travel should i be aiming to achieve in the rear end? it will ride stiffer than 'stock' because the main aim is to make it more fun on a road course, but how much is enough?

3" compression and 1" extension?
5" compression and 1.5" extension?
more?

IMO you can get acceptable ride and handling with 3" compression but you'll want at least 2" extension to prevent topping out.
