What kind of welders do you guys use for repairing, replacing floor pans, dash panels? I have been working on my 80 Z doing some floor pan work and so far it is ok but find it difficult to not blow holes through. I am using a Lincoln Idealarc 250 arc welder. Should i be using a mig? I have seen some pics in books and my job looks pretty good and everything is rock solid. What do you guys suggest?

I patched my floor boards with a Snap-On 110 Mig.

Im doing all my sheet metal work using a Millermatic 251 mig, would highly recomend using any mig welder on sheetmetal like that over the Arc welder

I use 110mig for all sheet metal and exhaust.

I used a Miller 150 (220v) with .024 wire. The smaller wire helps. If i'm welding thicker stuff (3/16"- 1/4") I switch to .030-.032 wire.

The idealarc is a good machine for sticking the pans in. The problem is you have to be pretty experienced not to blow holes through thin steel with an stick. It isnt a matter of what type of welder you are gonna use, its personal preferance. You can just as easily blow holes in it with a mig. Mig is just easier, and requres less experience. If you choose the right electrode, such as a E7014 or E7018, and the right diameter either 3/32 or 1/16 you will not have a problem if you set the current properly. Its only developing a technique for doing so. Another thing you can do is get a TIG setup for your stick, all you need is a torch, some tungsten, a bottle for the gas, and filler. If you do so its gonna take some getting use to, but the outcome will be allot better.
Try getting some ER70s filler, some 2% thoriated tungten rods in 1/16", and run pure Argon. If you have anytrouble try stopping in at your local welding supply store and the getting some suggestions/help. Good luck, hope I helped.
