Hey whats up guys and girls.....
I am just curious as to how probable is it to get 500hp to the wheels from a BBC 396. As far as I know, it has only been bored once .30 over. If you can cover both NA and Supercharged options, I would appreciate it. I have done a ton of research on this, and can't find too much info. Everything I read is based off of the 454.

I would like to stay with a BBC, and am considering the 502 ramjet, but even that doesn't make 500 to the wheels.

Help please.

I doubt it naturally aspirated unless its a max effort build. With a blower it's not a problem.

I'll be looking for Yody to chime in. For a NA application, I would not mess with a 396 when a nothing 454 core is so cheap. It will be easier with the additional 12% motor of the 454. As Jody said, you could supercharge a pretty mild 396 and see 500.

My 69 original 396/325 car has merlin heads and a decent hyd. cam. It is about as radical as you would want for a street and pump gas engine. However it would do good to hit 350 or so rwhp. One thing I like though is when comparing the 396 with a 454, the 396 hits a much sweeter "note" with same camshaft.I agree with the others that you will be hard pressing to get 500NA to the wheels without spending some stupid money. 454 would be much better bang for buck. Then again, it may be as cheap to build a 9:1 motor and supercharge it.....

This looks like another good thread to compare bang for buck guys. Just don't listen to Denny when he starts that LS1 stuff :lmao:

500RWHP is really a ton, that means the car is making ~650@ the flywheel.
Mid to low 400's @ the wheels is about the limit for a street driveable N/A 396. At that point in time you are going to be iffy on pump gas and be running some pretty serious valvetrain.
I'm curious if you are trying to meet a specific goal, or if 500RWHP is just an arbitrary number? Have you ever driven a car with that much power? Its really kind of unuseable
