Im setting up my 8.5 10 bolt with 3;42 Richmonds and a new Eaton.
With my old 3;73 and Auburn I found only .010 under the pinion. So I started with that but Now I have .050 under the pinion and the pattern looks good. But .050 sonds like alot.

I have .009 backlash. I added all new bearings and races if that matters.

0.050" isnt a big deal.

I have set up several with 0.090+ all the way up to a 0.120"ish pinion depth.

One thing to check might be........ that the pinion races are fully seated. I always use a air tool with a 2" sanding disc on it and hit the seat lands before I install the new races.

Sometimes when you beat the out races out of it, it leaves a material riser on the lands and you will never get the race fully seated unless you sand the riser down..... or until sometime later when normal use pounds the race back into it, and flattens the riser. Then the pre-load goes away and you kill the gear set.
