I am starting a new 1971 chevelle project and I'm just wondering if anyone is sourcing the new 6-speed auto tranny yet. I'd love to get my hands on one but I'm afraid of what the cost might be. A quick Google search didn't yield any sellers yet but that usually doesn't mean much.

Thanks!

not sure anyone knows how to control it yet

Nope. Don't hold your breath, either. The 6L80E uses very spohisticated electronics that are application specific. The design does not lend itself to the hot rod world where one application can vary greatly from the next.
Don't go out and buy one until you are sure the electronics have been sorted out. Start here: http://www.transmissioncontroller.com

doubt anyone has them working either, but there's also the 5L40E/5L50E

Does the 5L series require the same draconian electronics package for control? Thanks for the suggestion!

Almost. And wth the 6L stuff on the radar, resources have been diverted.

although no one has figured out the 6speed yet, i would think if you bought the whole package engine/tranny/ecm & disabled vats & other unnecessaries & installed in to a similar weight vehicle, it should work fine. hard part would be finding the wrecked vehicle.

One would think so. Leave the LS2 bone stock. Match the OE application's gear ratio and tire diameter. Even vehicle weight should be approximated in an effort to match load??? Then when all that is said and done, you must worry about errors generated by those systems that were unplugged. Is the 6L80E tied into the traction control? Does it require throttle by wire as a load input or will any old TPS sensor work?

What is the 6L80 rated to handle??

It's a flexible design that will be built to hanndle various torque ratings. Currently the big doggie is rated to 520lb-ft. They say that there is room to grow.

It would have to grow ALOT to put behind the awd C3 with 800 hp.

Me thinks it will be awhile before they are affordable, programmable for the general public, and have some aftermarket parts for them and the convertor. Oh well.

The new GM 6l transmissions will contain electronics in the trans themselves in most if not all applications. These tranbsmissions SHOULD lend themselves very well to swaps as long as the aftermarket can provide the needed parts/software.

The top 6l trans is rated at 520+ lb ft from the factory. This is pretty damn stout for a stock trans. The 6l90 or 95 is to follow shortly and is expected to be quite durable.

Any updates yet? I'm still a year out at least to finish my car. Would be willing to wait a little if need be. What's another year to the fourteen I've had the car already?:dunno:

The trans in a C5/C6 is in the rear, whether it's an auto or manual it does a conventional builder no good...Only the guts are the same, the cases are not interchangable. The Cads use thier own motor, not sure if it'll bolt up to a Chevy Gen III/IV motor.

Looks like the trucks are the only definative source for a 6L80/90.

And it will be another year until the GMT900 chassis will start seeing the 6l also.
