Hi All

I am just about to order my brakes.

My car is going to be 95% street, 5% race (drag and road race) No slicks. I have a 6.0 LQ4/T56 going in next year. My goal is around 550 hp.

I'm on the fence on what I need for a rearend.

My end goal was to get a 35 spline 9 inch.

But I'm not sure if it's necessary.

I don't like doing things multiple times. Well at least try not to do things multiple times.

But I'd rather replace it ahead if time before I'm in a jamb.

Thanks for your time.

Rodney is running a 10 bolt in his 68 Camaro (1sickt8) and he beats the crap out of his car. My buddy Chris has a 67 Camaro with a 10 bolt and ridetech 4 link behind a 383 stroker and a t56 and he also tracks his car and beats it up. Im am sticking with my 10 bolt. When It goes then it gives you a excuse to get a better one

Not sure which 10 bolt the 73 Camaors had I think they had switched to the 8.5 from the 8.2 by then. The 8.5 can handle it,but not the 8.2. I run one in my 78 TA with stock 28 spline axles and slicks pulling 1.5 60 fts at the strip. The 81 just got 30 spline and Eaton posi for it.

Skip Fix is correct that a 8.2 cannot handle that much power (technically the torque that a 550 hp engine will produce). An 8.5 10 bolt MIGHT. Aside from the drag slick or not issue, the question is auto or manual trans. if a manual, the next question is whether your clutch is matched to the engine power or not. Too much clutch is as bad as slicks.

Once you're past all the issues that cause a shock load, the axle rating is the limitation. it's a function of torque and gearing

Here's an article that will help.

A built 8.5" 10 bolt will handle that. Get the tubes welded, step up to 30 spline axles.

I've read in a rear end book that the GM 8.5 10 bolt rear like found in 2nd Gen F-Body is good for around 1000hp if it's properly prepared.

-The common upgrade for these rear ends is to install a 30 spline carrier, 30 spline axles, girdle cover and a 1350 pinion yoke for the driveshaft. 30 spline axles/carriers are pretty much a drop-in setup from later model trucks.
-You can go as far as installing new axle ends that allow you to run Ford big bearings with bolt-in axles.
-Building a floater setup is expensive but that can be done as well. Here's an interesting option I just stumbled upon on Lateral-G.

Thanks guys.

I'll be keeping the 10 bolt for now. I'll play it by ear.

It sounds like I should have plenty of rearend for a long time to come.

Like the others have said, a friend of mine and I both have identically-built 10-bolts (8.5", 3.73-3.90 gears, 30 spline axles, TruTracs) and they have been holding up perfectly over the last handful of years of 750-900hp turbo'd street "spirited driving".. you'll be fine keeping the 10bolt and building it up. It's amazing the phenomenon of how people consider anything less than an aluminum-carrier'd 9" to be unacceptably weak and not worth putting any money into building.

Stock 10 bolt behind 4spd and now 5spd. 550 HP 600LBS TQ on 40+ year old stock axles. Only mods are rear end girdle and fully welded axel tubes. No problems. Auto cross and some 1/4 mile on dot tires.

Wrong, an 8.2 CAN handle serious power with minimal mods. Upgraded quality axles like Moser or even Superior aftermarket replacements will do anything you need, simple throw on one of the preload rear covers and a proper rebuild is all that's neexed. My best friend with a machine shop had a 64 Tempest with built 400 Pontiac/4spd set up and could pull air with uncut car in 11.5 lb class, IE he had to carry 11.5 x 400cid to race. Banging a 4 SPD. All he kept breaking was ring and pinion as the old 60s/70s gears were not pro gears.
Sounds like your fine spending the 9in money elsewhere.
I had same style rearend in my 70 Monte Carlo never broke it.

4 speed maunal with ACT clutch,10 bolt 8.5 on my 72 Camaro, Ten Factory 28 splines chromoly axle shafts with 1/2 wheel studs, Strange 1350 chromoly yoke, Eaton limited slip differential and 3.08 gears, not worried for 600hp goal
