Hi,

I have a 1968 GTO ... The suspenion has been converted to all tubular with coilovers.
I wanted to update the power steering box and updated to a AGR Performance Resto Steering Boxe 492117.

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/agr-492117/overview/

I was looking for as close to Rack and Pinion as I could get and was not happy with this box which has
lots of slop and no road feel.

Someone recommended the Borgeson Delphi 600 Series box 800209 but it is back ordered everywhere.

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/brg-800209

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good 12:1 power steering box with good road feel and as close
to Rack and Pinion as possible.

Thank You for any help !

I had an AGR and didn't care for it either. When it came time to update the box on another car, I bit the bullet and chose DSE. Not sure what the ratio is, but has much better feel than the AGR did on the same platform (2nd gen f body).

Turn One 12:1 box is the one DSE is selling but they now show out of stock too. I had a DSE box on order with Summit but they cancelled my order due to no availability from DSE.

If you want it done cheap Google search the Jeep Grand Cherokee box swap. 12:1 steering for 75-100 bucks and it's a bolt in then add a cheap cooler and you're done. Ive ran mine now on auto X, street and one track day and its been fine and feels great. If you want expensive there's lots of good options. I think there's lots of details on the box swap in my build thread. Link in my signature.

Like mentioned before, Turn One is supposed to be one of the best options you can go with. They cost a lot of money but you can find units that have been serviced on ebay or other sources.

A friend of mine called and talked with the guys at Lee. Appears several of the employees stayed with the new owner and Tom Lee is working as a consultant.

I have a 69 Chevelle and I put a box in from a 86 monte ss. Lots better response and better road feel. Been on there for 15 plus years and no complaints. Keith

Thanks for all the suggestions guys !

DSE and Turn One are all back ordered forever on the 12:1 600 Series boxes ... Nobody has them anywhere !

Spoke to the Guy at Lee Power Steering who is going to custom build me a 12:1 Saginaw 800 box which he says will be just as good or better ... No slop, Great road feel, as close to rack and Pinion as you can get.

He also provides the pump because they have to be Calibrated together with the box ... I only had to provide him with the correct Pontiac can.

We will see ... 2 to 3 weeks build time ... Will post the results when I get it !

Good choice based on many others past experience. The 800 boxes are supposed to be good when properly prepared. The 12:1 box I have pictured above is a Performance Plus model from Turn One. I lucky and found it as a "serviced" box from someone on eBay.

Let us know how it goes and best of luck on it!

Great choice. I had Lee's rebuild my steering box in my 68 Camaro and couldn't be happier.
Has great feel, no slop at all. Very tight and responsive.
You won't be disappointed.

I've asked this before in other threads-anyone do a prepped 800 vs prepped 600 swap on their car(not a different car) and compare fell, driving?

Another possibility is the steering boxes from Ridetech, if they have proper application. Brets stuff is always top notch
Had a fella up in Bloomington, said he had whole Chevelle coilover setup and turned out it was some offshore knock off,,,no wonder he thought it was crap when he drove it.

Ridetech sells the Turn One box so they are likely on backorder too...

you can adjust the slop/movement out with the adjuster and lock nut on top, YES even some new boxes need to have slop taken out!

For tools, you’ll need a jack, a couple of jackstands, a 5/8″ box end wrench and a 3/16″ Allen wrench

Start by jacking the car up and centering the steering wheel. Get the tires just off the ground and the frame high enough to get a stand under.

Next, find the steering box. If you cannot do that, stop immediately and sell your car. Assuming you found it, you'll see the nut and adjusting Allen screw on the top of the box.

Fit your 5/8" wrench on the nut and crack it loose.

Loosen the nut a few turns to allow the adjusting screw to be tightened.

Now slip your 3/16" Allen into the adjusting screw and tighten it until snug.
IMPORTANT: Once snug, back the screw off a quarter of a turn and while holding the adjusting screw with the Allen, tighten the nut down with your wrench. Failing to back the screw off will result in a wheel that does not want to return to center and premature wear and issues with the sector shaft. Now cycle the wheel back and forth while the tires were up and then dropped the car to go for a ride.

One of the best five minute tweaks you can do to your Saginaw quick ratio steering box equipped car.
