For the long answer, read this (http://content.lincolnelectric.com/pdfs/products/literature/c64000.pdf) and this (http://content.lincolnelectric.com/pdfs/products/literature/c610.pdf).
The short answer is that 'L' signifies Low carbon content in stainless alloys. These are generally preferred because they end up with less internal stress in the weld, and in the case of dissimilar metal weldments, can reduce the likelyhood of hot cracking.

Please be aware that ER308x is the prefered filler for 304 base metal.

Here's (http://www.jwharris.com/welref/techguide/alloy_for_stain_steel/filler_metal/) a stainless filler metal selection chart, but to quickly answer your question: 304-304 joint would need 308 filler.

I found the above link with a search on "stainless filler selection chart" or some such...it's been a few years. I have it, a mild steel chart, an aluminum chart, and a magnesium and titanium chart on my office wall.

Totally off topic, but I've heard that Ti has to be welded in a vaccum - is this true?

Not to be rude, but use the search, guys! Below are the search results for "welding titanium". Happy reading.
