coil over adjustment for initial setup

Hello, I have a question pertaining front suspension adjustment on coil overs. What is the recommended amount of shaft between the coils that should be presented on the vehicle if the lower a-arms at horizontal to the ground, and whats the purpose of adjustable coil does a lot depend on the manufacture of coilivers or is there a set rule to follow?
